Xcel Energy: powering the next generation of STEM leaders
Gone are the days when utility jobs and STEM careers were assumed to be filled by men alone, but there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure that young women know all of their career options. One influential company at the forefront of this issue is Xcel Energy Colorado.
As the presenting sponsor of the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce Girls Rising event, Xcel is showing its commitment to developing a pipeline of female leaders who will fill future jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math.
“We are passionate about getting girls into STEM early on in order to build a diverse pipeline,” said Baird McKevitt, Director of Diversity & Inclusion. “We want to bring awareness about the opportunities in our industry and encourage diversity. We learn so much more from one another when not everyone looks and thinks the same.”
In 2018 alone, Xcel provided $600,000 to support education initiatives that provide hands-on STEM learning opportunities and programs that increase the number of individuals pursuing STEM careers.
In addition, Xcel Energy Colorado President, Alice Jackson was just recognized this year as one of the CWCC’s Top 25 Most Powerful Women in Business!
