How to Effectively use Keywords for Social Media Marketing

By Heather Lutze, CEO Findability Group Search Marketing and CWCC member

In today’s post, I want to answer an internet marketing question that I’ve been asked over and over, and give you yet another taste of Thumbonomics: The Essential Business Roadmap for Social Media & Mobile Marketing.

Here’s an excerpt from Chapter 5…

How do you make yourself “findable” on social media sites?

“Simple—by strategically using keywords in everything you do. Yes, it will take some initial work, but you’ll reap the benefits in a couple of different ways:

You’ll be rewarded by your ranking in the search engines, because search engines are watching what’s going on in social media. They’re looking for key indicators to help them decide where to put you in search results.

If you use specific keyword phrases in your tweets, your blog post titles, YouTube video titles, in Facebook or LinkedIn profiles, then you are effectively conveying a message to Google about how you want to be found.

Effective use of keyword phrases puts you in touch with a viable user audience that you can connect with, you can help, and last but not least—you can sell to.

How Do You Choose Your Optimum Keywords?

I recommend developing a list of 30 keywords. The best possible place you can find these all important words is in the page search campaign or Pay-Per-Click campaign you are already running. Simply pull the 30 or 50 top performing keywords out of that campaign, and make a list to use in your social media posts…”

So far so good, right? But what if you have no Pay-Per-Click campaign, and only a vague idea of how you think customers are searching for you? In that case, I cannot recommend the Google AdWords keyword tool too highly. It is one of my go‑to tools, allowing you to peek inside Google, and see the amount of searches for a particular keyword in the last 30 days, as well as an average of the last 12 months, both globally and locally.

The Google keyword tool is easy to use—honest—and lets you search for keyword ideas using any combination of keywords, a URL, and categories. You can filter your results by search volume, mobile search, and compare statistics for your keywords. This takes the guesswork out of keywords, and gives you a great idea of what phrases to integrate into your posts and tweets to connect with your target market.
